This story is about a beggar. A wretched and hapless beggar who looked so dirty that no one bothered to care for him. But he cared for all. In this heart- rendering story he proves that humanity exists.
It was rainy season in Japan. A beggar who wandered about in the city streets took shelter in front of a small shop, which had an expanded shade which extended up to the narrow dark lane just outside it. It was a dark night, when he came up here in search of a safe haven. That night he slept peacefully, even though he was perturbed by mosquitoes and rats.

Next morning, he was awakened by a splash of cold water. The rude and unkind shopkeeper was so angry to see a grimy tramp outside his shop that he chose to throw a bucket of cold water on him. Still, the beggar did not go away. He sat there day after day, even when the shopkeeper continued his utmost impolite behavior regularly. Many a times so happened that he sent his pet dog to bite the beggar.
The beggar being dumb could not revolt. He quietly tolerated his inexorable thrashing. Day after day his health kept collapsing as he was aging too. But one night, it happened so that the beggar was sleeping when two thieves came to ransack the shop.
Even though the shop was small but it was precious for its owner who earned his living through it. The beggar, although was mistreated, but valued his efforts. As soon as he realized that the rowdy thieves wearing black helmets were trying to open the shutter, he got up and pulled them through.
They both fell down and got up with more rage. They found a stick and started beating him ruthlessly. The tramp’s head started bleeding yet he didn’t lose hope and strength. He kept fighting until a police jeep came in the locality. Hearing the siren, the burglars ran away, leaving him in a very bad condition. He kept bleeding as they had tried to kill him with a knife.
That dizzy night, no one was there to save the poor man. He was left there alone, crying out of pain. He died, after fighting with life for few hours. Next morning when people gathered there, they came to know what had actually happened last night from a feeble security guard of a nearby society.
The shopkeeper felt very agonized and guilty, he kept taunting and misbehaving with the old man, but he gave up his life just to save his property. With tears in his eyes, he felt very thankful and prayed for the soul of the angel in disguise.
MORAL: don’t judge people unless you know about them. First try to talk to them, know their story and then take a decision. Remember, each person has a story. Be it a beggar. He might be beggar from birth but not by his choice, or may be circumstances made him a beggar. So please empathize towards all human beings.
