Step 1: Eligibility

The first step to become an IAS officer is to check whether you are eligible to take the exam. The eligibility criteria for IAS exam are as follows:

  • Nationality: You must be a citizen of India.
  • Age limit: You must be between 21 and 32 years of age as on 1st August of the year in which you are appearing for the exam. However, there are certain age relaxations for reserved categories.
  • Educational qualification: You must have a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. There are no minimum percentage requirements.

Step 2: Prepare for the exam

Once you have confirmed your eligibility, the next step is to start preparing for the exam. The IAS exam is conducted in three stages: Preliminary, Main, and Interview.

  • Preliminary Exam: The Preliminary exam consists of two objective-type papers of 200 marks each. The first paper is on General Studies and the second paper is on Aptitude Test. The exam is designed to test your general knowledge, analytical and problem-solving skills. The exam is conducted in May or June every year.
  • Main Exam: The Main exam is a written exam consisting of 9 papers, out of which 7 are compulsory and 2 are optional. The compulsory papers include Essay, General Studies (4 papers), and Language (2 papers). The optional papers are selected by the candidate based on their interests and qualifications. The Main exam is conducted in September or October every year.
  • Interview: The Interview is the final stage of the IAS exam. It is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to assess the personality and communication skills of the candidate. The Interview is usually held in March or April every year.

To prepare for the IAS exam, you need to have a clear understanding of the exam pattern, syllabus, and previous year question papers. You can also join coaching classes or self-study using various books and online resources.

Step 3: Apply for the exam

The next step is to apply for the IAS exam. The UPSC releases the notification for the exam in February or March every year. You can apply for the exam online by visiting the UPSC website. The application fee for the exam is Rs. 100 for general category candidates, while there is no fee for SC/ST/PWD candidates.

Step 4: Clear the exam

Once you have applied for the exam, the next step is to clear the exam. The IAS exam is highly competitive, and the success rate is very low. You need to work hard and stay focused to crack the exam. Here are a few tips that can help you clear the exam:

  • Have a clear understanding of the exam pattern and syllabus.
  • Make a study plan and stick to it.
  • Study regularly and revise frequently.
  • Solve previous year question papers and mock tests.
  • Stay updated with current affairs.
  • Improve your writing skills and practice essay writing.

Step 5: Training and Posting

Once you have cleared the exam and interview, you will be allotted a rank based on your performance. The candidates are then assigned to various administrative positions in different states and central government departments based on their rank. The IAS officers undergo a 2-year training at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie, followed by on-the-job training in their respective states or departments.
