Internet Explorer 10 comes in basically two different versions: the minimalist Modern UI/ the Metro version, that is accessed from the Start screen and traditional, full-featured Desktop version that is accessed from the Taskbar.
In this article, we would provide you some useful tips and tricks to help you to get to know both the versions of Internet Explorer, specifically the new Modern UI/Metro version.
- The User Interface
The Windows UI version of IE10 is a bare bones version in reality, optimized for immensely faster browsing and the touch devices, but works quite well with a keyboard and a mouse, as well.
The Desktop version of IE10 is basically the full-featured version that you might be familiar with from the previous versions of the Windows.
- Home Page
The Windows UI IE10 and the Internet Explorer for Desktop as a matter of fact share a very common home page, or even multiple home page tabs, specifically. To set one or more than one home page tabs for both the versions of IE10, just click on the gear icon in the upper, right corner of the window and then select the Internet Options from drop-down menu.
In Home page section on General tab, just enter one or more than one URLs to use that as your home page tab(s). now, click on Use current to use URL from the currently opened tab as one of your home page tabs. So, click OK to accept the changes.
- Add-ons
The Modern UI/Metro version of IE10 does not really support add-ons. To take the advantage of additional functionality of the add-ons, use Desktop version of IE10. To manage the add-ons in your Desktop version of IE10, just click on the gear button in the upper and right corner of the IE10 window and then select Manage add-ons from the drop-down menu.
When the Manage Add-ons dialog box displays, just click on the type of add-on from the Add-on Types list on the left and then select on the add-on to enable, remove or disable in the list on the right.
The Links on the lower left of dialog provide access to the additional add-ons of the type that is selected, as well as more information about that type of the add-on.
- Cookies
The session cookies are shared between basically two versions of IE10. The persistent cookies are shared between the two versions only when the Enhanced Protected Mode (EPM) setting is just the same for both versions. By default, the Modern UI/Metro version of IE10 has just EPM turned on and Desktop version of IE10 has the EPM turned off. If you want persistent cookies, like site login information, to be actually available in both the versions of IE10, then turn on the EPM setting as really discussed in the previous section.
Cookies can also be deleted by opening Internet Options dialog box, as has been mentioned earlier in the article. You just need to click the Delete button in the Browsing history section of General tab.
