Step 1:

Connect both the laptops or computers with a single LAN cable (ethernet or crossover cable) and then turn ON sharing option on both the computers.

Next, go to

Control Panel> Network and Internet> Network and Sharing Centre> Advanced sharing settings.

NOTE: Make sure that you turn OFF the password protection which will make your job less tedious as you won’t have to type your password each time you try to access it from another computer; and don’t forget to turn ON the network detection.

Step 2:

Bring both the computers on the same network and open- Control panel> Network and sharing Centre.

You would see Local Area Connection or Ethernet.

Right click on it and go to the its properties.

You would see ipv4/ TCP option there and you just need to select its properties.

Now, you can use the IP address given in the example below, or you can use the original ones, as long as they are in the same range.

Options              1st computer               2nd computer

IP Address            10.30. 15. 26                 10.30.15.27

Subnet mask        225.225.225.0               225.225.225.0

Default gateway    192.168.1.5                   192.168.1.4

Basically, we are just changing the IP addresses by keeping the subnet mask same. Hopefully, if everything falls in place, you would be able to see two computer’s names in the network settings.

Step 3:

Now it’s time to share files and folders from one computer to the another through LAN.

Select the folder, you want to share, and right click on it.

Then from the drop-down menu, click on

Share with>specific people.

From the drop-down menu select

Everyone> add > click share

Well in just three steps you can share files through on of the easiest methods available. Also, it becomes easier if you staying in a hostel, where usually the range is same.
